Nathan Thornhill was born and raised in Xenia, Ohio. Growing up as a Puerto Rican and an African-American, Nathan battled with identity and belonging. Not accepted by either community Nathan experienced rejection from both Latinos and African-Americans. As a youth Nathan wasn’t very in touch with his Latino identity, however when his grandparents passed away he realized that he was losing touch with his Puerto Rican culture. Therefore, in addition to learning more about his heritage and Caribbean history, Nathan started studying Spanish and pursued opportunities to travel abroad. He visited Spain and in Argentina Nathan discovered his calling towards education. As an teacher, Nathan pushes his students to ask themselves who they are and to build connections with one another. Due to the pandemic, Nathan now works from home and connects with his students via Zoom. As an adult Nathan is deeply involved with the Ohio Latino community and volunteers as a youth mentor, among other things.
